ABOUT THE TOMBAK
RHYTHM OF PERSIAN MUSIC
The Tombak is the principal goblet-shaped drum of Persian classical music. Traditionally carved from a single piece of wood and covered with an animal-skin drumhead, it is played directly with the hands and fingers. Its sophisticated technique produces a wide range of sounds through strokes, finger rolls, snaps and combinations of contrasting tones, allowing the instrument to function both as an accompanimental and highly expressive solo instrument.
